Artist Statement

These works are my first for social justice. I began this work to aid my healing after misery from serious health issues and an abusive relationship. Quickly, I realized these paintings are for anyone who has suffered abuse or abusive control, hateful criticism, condemnation, or judgment of differences one may have from the advertised perfect human and what society renders “good” or “acceptable.” 

 

Distortions and abstractions of figurative representation depict feelings of desperation and unrecognition of oneself. The underpaintings are full of life, movement, texture, color, breath, and freedom. The subsequent layers cover up the free life and represent rules, laws, expectations of others, abusive control, bullying, judgment, dismissal, and any abusive behavior toward another, which causes one to lose the self. 

 

No titles are assigned to the images so that some who look deeply into the art, will see themselves and understand they are not alone. Every experience is unique, and every person is unique.
